Eighteen concrete mixes divided into three groups were conducted. Crushed dolomite, round gravel, and crushed basalt all of 20 mm maximum grain size were investigated. For each type of coarse aggregate, six levels of concrete consistency calibrated by standard slump test were tried.

The displaced volume per unit mass, bearing strength, as well as shear yield strength were the evaluated properties.
The results introduce the cone penetration test as a simple instrument that could be adopted either at a laboratory or at site to evaluate fresh concrete workability.
Because I'm covering the basics here, I may oversimplify a few points.
Experts in the industry could point out exceptions to many of the general statements I may make. These requirements take into consideration the weather conditions that the concrete will be exposed to in service, and the required design strength. The compressive strength of a concrete is determined by taking standard molded, standard-cured cylinder samples. And from this point of view it is the quality of the teachers, and of the teaching they give, that matters more in the long run than logistics.Fortunately, we have in this country a tradition of independence and vitality amongst the teachers which guarantees that new knowledge and experience is quickly translated into new courses, new ideas about the way schools should be run, and new teaching methods. Many factors need to be taken into account, from the cost of the various additives and aggregates, to the trade offs between the "slump" for easy mixing and placement and ultimate performance.
